So what do you think? Is G-man really a villain? Or is he just a bureaucrat, someone sent in to do a dirty job? Does he actually have humanities and earth's interest at heart ultimately? Is this a long game to defeat the combine? or are his employers even worse than the combine? They're very obviously gearing up towards a major confrontation with G-man in the next half-life game considering the ending to Alyx, anyone want to call their shot regarding the g-man? So it would seem to me that the ultimate backdrop is some sort of conflict between the Combine advisors, and the G-men (if there are more than one). They fear the G-man more than any other entity they've seen in the entire half life series, going through insane lengths to try and capture him, using enslaved vortigaunt technology.
It seems evident that the G-man and the combine are mortal enemies. He also allows Alyx Vance to change the timeline to save her father, albeit in exchange for her becoming "hired" against her will. He straight up saves Gordon Freeman's life a couple of times, and was the one who saved Alyx Vance's life when she was a child, seemingly going above his "superiors" heads. He also engineers the entire invasion of earth, both providing the anomalous substance that triggers the resonance cascade, and re-arming the nuclear bomb that destroys black mesa.ĭespite all this, he does have a few moments where he explicitly helps the player. And he is infamous for "plucking" people out of the timeline and keeping them trapped in stasis until he "needs" them, the latest being Alyx Vance, but he's also done the same to Gordon Freeman and Adrian Shepherd is seemingly in eternal stasis.
The vortigaunt do not trust him at all, and G-Man gets visibly upset when they interrupt his abduction of Gordon Freeman at the end of HL2: Episode 1.

You see the G-Man several times in the half life series and his motives are never laid out, other than he seems to be working with some higher power known as his "employers." He frequently is seen pulling string to cause cascading consequences, but at the same time seems protective of both Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance in multiple occasions.
